Lovely Spa, overall hotel lacked in friendliness

This is a lovely spa complex with a nice hotel attached. In a reasonably quiet district 1.5km out of town, it was a bit of an effort to walk back up the hill after eating out in the evening, but we don't count that against the hotel, just our observation. The spa is truly spectacular with a series of amazing rooms to indulge your senses in free of charge (except special treatments/massage etc). In comparison to another recent stay in a 5 star hotel, there was a feeling that it was superior but in an unfriendly way. Staff were only too pleased to be of assistance but we didn't feel overly welcome, especially compared to German guests at breakfast.... I also did not appreciate the captive birds in the netted area adjacent to the 1st floor balcony and beside the breakfast area.
