Good hotel but poor restaurants

I spent a week here at the end of October at the end of the tourist season so the weather wasn't great and the hotel and the resort was not busy. Overall it was a nicer stay but I'm not sure it deserved it's five star rating. Plus points include it's location away from the noisy centre at the bottom of Puerto de la cruz where is filled with lower end hotels, restaurants, pubs and shops. The hotel runs a free shuttle bus down into the centre and it's only about €5 for a short taxi ride back to hotel. The reception will give you a timetable for the bus times. The hotel is just off the main road that runs through the area. The decor is oriental based like the hotel name suggests but it also very dated and in need of renewal. The rooms looks as if they are still stuck in the 80s era! This is obviously a hotel geared for families as the first room I was given had an adjoining door to the next room. I was unaware of this and while it was locked I didn't feel comfortable and asked for a room change which was dealt with promptly. Beware that none of the rooms are sound proofed so it can get quite noisy. I was on the second floor just above the restaurant/ bar area which was quite noisy on the first night as they had a drinks reception on the first night and I could hear the other guests returning from late nights out or enjoying the cabaret in the bar. There are two doors between the room and the corridor which provides some sound proofing but not always. The room and bathroom were kept tidy and clean but the carpet in my room was not vacuumed for the lay 3 days of my stay and I noticed that the bathroom floor wasn't cleaned properly on 2 occasions where I noticed rubbish on the floor was swept from behind the bathroom door to the other side of the room. The communal areas where much the same. On one day when the weather was wet I visited the lounge bar after breakfast at around 11.30 and there were nuts and rubbish over the sofa's and carpet. The hotel offered one of the best buffet breakfasts I've had. Quite often I had a 3 course breakfast that would hold me over until dinner with the widest selection of hot, cold, savory and sweet foods. The food was always fresh and replaced promptly. As i was impressed with the breakfast I decided to give the other restaurants in the hotel a try for evening dinner. Unfortunately the restaurants were all subpar and expensive what what it is- service was hit and miss, the quality of food was average and the food bland even the Thai restaurant which has apparently been recognised by a Thai prince but which served one of the most disappointing Thai meals I've ever had. The food in general in Tenerife is not the best so it's probably quite standard but I wouldn't waste the money at the hotel restaurants when there's eateries just on the main road which is a 2 minute walk from the hotel. For the size of the hotel I was somewhat surprised by the small pool area. When I was there it was low season so there weren't many guests so there was no shortage of sunbeds but I can envisage it being very crowded during high season. The best features is the spa that is for over 16 only that had an outdoor and indoor pool and again 2 indoor and one outdoor jacuzzi pools and an indoor thermal circuit and water beds. Guests can use the spa area at no extra cost, you only need to pay for spa treatments should you decide to treat yourself. It's a great way to relax after a day of sightseeing or on rainy days with towels, hot lemon tea, water and apples available. My only complaint are the water beds that are mounted into a marble surround. I'm of standard height and even I had to hop up to get onto it and hop down to get off which is not very safe. I would recommend that they have a step that allows guests to get on and off the waterbeds more easily . The spa treatments are expensive but then you would expect that fire a five star hotel. I booked one of the Hawaiian massages which was ok but not worth €80. Overall I would rate my stay as good but don't have too high expectations.
