Mismatch between price and quality!
Whilst there are a lot of positive reviews on this hotel, expectation differs depending on the price you pay. This was our summer vacation and we had decided to splash out and book a junior suite - so almost Euro350 per night! So lets start with the hotel. Its a large hotel near the botanic gardens in puerto de la cruz. Having a car is an advantage but the hotel provides an hourly shuttle bus into the town and there is a local bus stop 5 minutes from the hotel. The junior suite room was large, with a limited selection of toiletries given the premium room status. the room did NOT include tea and coffee making facilities. The room did NOT include any complimentary tea or coffee from room service. In fact the premium room status offered very little in terms of added benefits! One bowl of fruit...which was on Day 1 and that's it! Were we disappointed....absolutely! A COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY! Breakfast - one the first day we were shown to a table and a drinks order taken, From day 2 onwards, it was a case of find your own table! Service was generally very poor - waiting a long time from tea/coffee and sometimes the caffe latte NEVER arrived! They have the cava bottles out on Saturday and Sunday, but for the rest of the week - you have to ask for a glass as it remains behind closed doors! The buffet is also virtually the same every day....so it does get a little boring given food is an important part of the vacation. The one MAJOR PLUS point was there fantastic selection of gluten free items for breakfast. This is the best selection we have seen anywhere. Given the size of the hotel, the actual swimming pool was more like a token gesture! The spa area for adults only was a little larger, although when we visited - 2 of the 4 hot rooms were not working! The gym was small and basic and the rowing machine was impossible to work!! The hotel has nightly entertainment....this was also extremely disappointing all nights with exception to the amazing flamenco dancing. The abba tribute act possibly hit some of the right notes....just not in the right order! With the audience typically limited to the small number of pensioners that probably had little choice, this was not a plus point and actually provided the reason NOT to drink in the bar! The restaurants were also very expensive, so we decided to take advantage of the cheaper and enjoyable local places, where a meal with drink was around 40 euros for 2 people - the price of a main course at the hotel! For the hotel, it was overpriced and disappointing and we would not return or recommend this to anyone. In terms of our travels around Tenerife - Puerto de la Cruz was quaint with a small harbour and shops. It also had a couple of beach complexes that looked very popular for families seeking sun and safe waters. If you plan to see Mt. Teide - the passes to the summit are in BIG demand. We visited Tenerife in July and it was fully booked until September!!! I would therefore recommend you book your summit pass online before you travel. You can get the cable car up the mountain and this is still worthwhile without the summit pass as the views of Tenerife are amazing. It is also VERY COLD up the mountain - so additional warm clothing is recommended! Driving in Tenerife is also an interesting experience as the roads signs are sometimes in short supply and in some cases, the sign only appears at the turning point - so no notice, which means you miss your turning...unless you have sat nav! (which clearly I did not!). The local Botanic gardens is rather small, but still worth a visit and there is also a local crazy golf attraction about 10 minutes walk. Again basic, but nevertheless fun and you can then enjoy an ice cold beer :)
