Relaxing 5 night break - just what the Doctor ordered!
My husband and I took advantage of our teenage son going on a ski trip with his school to have a five night stay at the Hotel Botanico. We arrived stressed out from work and I had a heavy cold. We left 5 days later feeling completely rejuvenated. All the staff without exception were wonderful - friendly, courteous and patient with my faltering Spanish. I headed for the steam room, sauna, laconium and aromatherapy rooms in the Spa and, immediately, my cold started to get better (although apologies to anyone who was in there the same time as me!) We spent a lot of time in the Botanical Gardens (my husband is a very keen gardener and amateur botanist), and we really enjoyed our sight-seeing day in Puerto de la Cruz. We visited the Orchid Gardens, the beautiful Catholic Church and its Museum and the Contemporary Art Gallery which I loved. We had some great tapas for lunch in the Town and also dinner one night in a lovely local restaurant recommended by our Sovereign Concierge. I personally don't think the town is over-touristy - to me it seemed like a functioning working town which I liked. We also spent a day at Loro Parque - we love nature and are possibly just Big Kids anyway! The other nights we ate in the Canarian restaurant in the hotel. I see that reviews of this are mixed but what I loved was that it had a different feel from the rest of the hotel, much more like a Spanish Bodega and yet we could conveniently be back in our room a few minutes after finishing dinner (important for us as we were catching up on sleep!) I really enjoyed the food there, especially the octopus and prawns and we tried some delightful local wines and the service was excellent. We also enjoyed the odd cocktail in the relaxing bar (I took a photo of the rather "interesting" Canarius cocktail my husband chose, complete with partly-peeled banana. He assures me it was delicious. The breakfasts are out of this world - a chocolate fountain with strawberries at breakfast, what's not to like? We made an effort to go to the Opera entertainment in the Bar which was of a very high standard but didn't see any of the other entertainment so can't comment on that. In summary, fabulous hotel, great spa, beautiful gardens, fantastic staff and good food and drink. we will definitely return as soon as we can.
