Could do better

We emailed the hotel prior to arrival to request an upper floor room. Upon arrival we were informed that we had been upgraded to a pool view (which we had already booked anyway). However room 251 allocated was on the 2nd floor and the view blocked by a very large tree immediately in front of the balcony which blocked out sun and light with a noisy road to the left. In addition there was a very nasty smell of drains coming from the bathroom. We spoke to the reservations manager and were told that although they could do something about the nasty smell we would not be able to change rooms for three days. We were then moved to the 4th floor for our final week which had a brighter outlook but this was on a smoking floor. It would seem that 3rd & 4th floors with the best views are allocated to guests wishing to smoke. As we were staying 11 nights which was longer that most guests we were disappointed that we were allocated such a poor room initially. The room was well appointed and quiet but we sometimes had to leave the balcony due to the cigarette smoke. Breakfast was very good and varied. This is not an adult only hotel and the main pool is very popular with families. The spa area however is adults only but there were insufficient sunbeds to cater for demand even though there is plenty of space on the grass. Guests not finding an available sunbed were seated on towels on the grass. The spa area is also non-smoking and mobile phones are not permitted. However, some guests did not feel that the signs to this effect did not apply to them. The interior of the hotel is stunning and the grounds are spectacular and beautifully kept. This could be a wonderful hotel with a little more attention to detail.
