Hotel Botánico (2941)

Nice hotel but average for 5*

We stayed ten days. This is a nice hotel but it's average for a 5 star venue. I would have scored it above average but couldn't say it was worth the higher rating. The hotel is a bit of an oasis at the top of a very steep hill (25 mins walk) outside the main town. It is probably at the end of its refurbishment cycle. The rooms are a little tired and dated. Recharging phones etc was a pain. Wi-FI was so slow I switched to 4G. It was a bit like an old Marriott. The beds are two singles pushed together and made up as singles rather than a true double. Premier inn beds are much better. (I hated the beds). The SPA was really nice and has a separate adults only pool which some will like. I found it crowded so in the main season imagine it would be a problem. The Restaurants are poor value. The Spanish one was really poor. The Asian one was much better for food and service. (1950's dress code partially applies - bizarre but tee shirt, torn jeans and "casual" shoes is ok. Tailored shorts are not). Drinks are expensive. 2-3x what you pay 100m outside the hotel. Coffee was 4€ and Nescafé from an automatic machine. ( really poor - coffee shop just outside is much nicer and 90c. ) Gin and tonic was more than 10€. Our room overlooked the main pool and was west facing. The balcony was hot in the afternoon. The longer I stayed the more I liked the hotel so feel it's an acquired taste. Clientele is mixed. Lots of older couples (65-85). Lots of same sex couples. Almost no kids. I would come again but I see this as 4 star and in need of a refresh.
