A very nice and relaxing hotel

I stayed at the hotel as a solo traveller for 1 week in early November. I really liked the hotel and would definitely visit again. The general decor and style of the hotel is slightly dated but not in a shabby way, and I found it quite appealing and it made it feel more comfortable and relaxed than some other large 5 star hotels. I grew to like the feel of the hotel more as the week went on. The general quality and cleanliness of the hotel was very good. I found all the staff very helpful whenever I needed anything, yet they were also unobtrusive. There were several other single guests at the hotel, so I did not feel conspicuous. The breakfast was excellent. I only ate 1 evening in the hotel, at the Spanish restaurant. It was OK, but nothing special and I found other restaurants nearby that were better value. The hotel has a very large lounge bar area. There was live music every evening but the lounge was nearly always almost empty. Most of the guests were relatively elderly, so I guess maybe they mostly went to bed early! I think maybe they could have improved the atmosphere in the lounge bar in the evenings by placing the live music closer the bar and making it a more intimate atmosphere, rather than having the music playing on a stage at the far end of the large room. The bedrooms were not fantastically sound-proof, either from inside or outside, but the hotel and the surrounding area are generally fairly quiet, so that wasn't a major issue. The hotel is on the hillside a good 20 minute walk to/from the town centre. It's a fairly steep walk, but OK if you're reasonably fit. Otherwise there is a shuttle service or taxis available. I used the hotel spa everyday. Like the rest of the hotel, it was a very relaxing and comfortable place to hang out. Overall I would recommend the hotel for anyone wanting a relaxing week, in a good quality, comfortable setting. It also makes a good base to explore the island.
