Poema del Mar (1334)

Spectacular

At €25 the cost is comparable with other European zoos and aquariums and is well worth it. The aquarium is spectacular from beginning to end. It is beautifully designed, brilliantly laid out with a great range of species of fish, amphibians and reptiles. We had the bonus of two human ‘exhibits’ cleaning one of the larger tanks. The jungle walk eases you in to the spectacle that follows as the tanks get bigger and bigger culminating in a huge deep sea tank that is breathtaking. Sharks, rays, turtles and shoals of smaller fish swim here. The smaller tanks are equally special with colourful corals, brightly coloured tropical fish, luminous moon jelly fish, sea horses and sea dragons as well as the ‘uglier’ fearsome moray, conga and electric eels The use of lighting and popular classical music adds to the magic. We didn’t use the restaurant as we had plans to eat elsewhere. A couple of them have views of the tanks. Take your time to walk around. We spent 3.5 hours in there. There is a large car park outside but the Santa Catalina bus terminus is a 5 minute walk away. A return visit: yes, certainly when we return to the island.
