Greenwashing bij Poema del Mar
Ons bezoek aan Poema del Mar in Gran Canaria begon veelbelovend: overal in het aquarium waren sterke boodschappen over duurzaamheid, klimaatverandering en de noodzaak om onze oceanen te beschermen. Ze benadrukken hoe belangrijk de oceanen zijn als de ‘longen van de aarde’ en waarschuwen voor de schade van vervuiling en overbevissing. Het leek een plek die echt waarde hecht aan natuurbehoud. Maar toen ik in het restaurant kwam, werd ik teleurgesteld. Ze bieden gewoon vis en vlees aan op het menu. Bovendien hadden ze het over de vergankelijkheid van het materiaal dat wordt gebruikt voor vissersnetten – alsof dat hun betrokkenheid bij duurzaamheid benadrukt. Toch serveren ze in het restaurant producten die zonder diezelfde vissersnetten helemaal niet op het menu zouden kunnen staan. Dat voelt hypocriet: hoe kun je aan de ene kant oceaanbescherming promoten en aan de andere kant producten serveren die bijdragen aan het probleem? Daarnaast leven alle dieren die hier te zien zijn, helaas ook in gevangenschap, vaak in veel te kleine tanks. Het heeft bijna iets pervers dat je in hetzelfde gebouw waar deze dieren opgesloten leven, gerechten kunt bestellen waarin hun soortgenoten worden geserveerd. Het gaf me het gevoel dat Poema del Mar duurzaamheid vooral gebruikt als marketingstrategie, zonder echt actie te ondernemen. Heel jammer voor een plek met zo’n platform en invloed.
