Best aquarium I’ve visited, it’s fabulous

In Gran Canaria for the second time this year, we found that the Poema Del Mar aquarium was around 200m from where our cruise ship was berthed. From the outside it looks a little uninspiring, a large white building that could be mistaken for a storage facility if you were walking by… However, be prepared to be amazed, I have been to a lot of aquariums including an amazing one in Singapore a few years ago but the Poema Del Mar is definitely my favourite. You are given a map of the layout with your ticket and advised to follow the arrows on the floor to get the best experience but we did find it confusing at times and had to double back on occasion to ensure we hadn’t missed anything. Don’t let that put you off though because as aquariums go, it was fantastic. The displays are well set out and described by electronic touch pads that give you information on the fish species, the quality of the “tanks”.. well you cannot really call them tanks, more like “environments” was outstanding. The fish and all variety of marine life looked healthy and happy in the crystal clear water. The huge curved acrylic screen that envelopes the biggest environment is said to be the largest of its kind in the world and we spent considerable time just lying on the cushions that are thoughtfully provided looking up at the aquatic wonder’s within… it was so relaxing. There are a couple of places to get food and refreshments, the toilets were clean and wifi was free and fast. We came out after several hours feeling soothed and in genuine wonder at this incredible universe we exist in and the the amazing variety of life that has evolved. Well done to the creators and custodians of this truly amazing attraction, ten out of ten!
